Through this pragmatic approach to core reading programs and literature-based instruction teachers are offered opportunities to effectively use both to enhance their students’ literacy instruction and learning. The authors select various sample themes and lessons from existing core programs. From this base, they show multiple ways that teachers can extend these initial learnings to more complex, deeper understandings. Similar to core reading programs, the authors provide multiple ways to extend the core reading experience, where teachers can choose what best fits the needs of their students. For use with Grades K-3.

Review by Intermediate Teacher for Your Core Reading Program & Children’s Literature: Effective Strategies for Using the Best of Both
Rating:
I think that this book is a must have for all intermediate teachers who are looking for a better way to use their basal readers. The book give specific examples from 4-6 basal texts and gives great ideas on how to expand those singular basal excerpts and go deep. The main purpose is to engage students in authentic reading and writing experiences that will help them to develop important skill necessary to become the critical thinking students we teachers want them to become.
