What Should Be In Your Child’s Preschool Curriculum?

Boston-area parents in search of preschools in Brookline or Brookline daycare centers offering a preschool program, might be surprised to discover how many different l curriculums there are for this age group. Some of the better-known preschool curriculums include Montessori and Reggio Emilia, but most preschools and daycare centers in Brookline tend to use a combination of curriculum models in their classrooms.

With each curriculum model having a different style of learning associated with it and variations of these models being used by preschools in Brookline, the question becomes how do parents determine which Brookline preschool curriculum is best for their child? The answer is that it really depends on your child’s learning style, temperament, age, developmental stage and your parenting philosophy.

What is the Purpose of a Preschool Curriculum?

While curriculums vary in terms of activities, learning, and teaching methods, the goals of the curriculum for preschoolers are essentially the same. Whether your child attends a Brookline daycare center with an age-appropriate program or one of Brookline’s preschools, programs for this age strive to enhance the social, intellectual, emotional, and cognitive development of the child.

What Should a Preschool Curriculum Include?

A typical preschool curriculum used in a Brookline childcare center, preschool or family daycare in Brookline will include activities that increase language and literary skills, as well as prepare children for math and science. Basic activities that foster these skills include identifying sizes, shapes, colors, and words, In addition, activities that focus upon developing the ability to recognize patterns and sequences in the form of numbers, shapes or letters should always be part of a preschool curriculum.

Enriched programs for Brookline preschool children will include reading stories, drawing pictures, writing practice and telling stories aloud. These activities may seem like “play” but in fact, they prepare children for reading and strengthen their language skills. Given that much learning for older children requires a solid foundation in reading and language skills, parents should ascertain this is included in the curriculum used by their Brookline preschool program. In addition, family daycare in Brookline for preschoolers should also foster early math skills such as counting, recognizing patterns, shapes and categories. In some cases, children may even be introduced to the concept of telling time.

When evaluating a program’s curriculum, there is one thing to keep in mind. Regardless of the Brookline preschool program you choose, the activities presented to the children should be engaging and provide ample opportunities to learn and masters skills upon which a lifetime of learning may be built.
