As a student and soon-to-be graduate under a Child and Families Studies program, I would highly recommend this video to anyone that already has or is planning to have children. Dr. Brazelton explains the growth and development of infants and toddlers in a way that is easy to understand.
I like that the video uses actual parents, not just experts, to explain thoughts and feelings that they are going through during pregnancy, birth, and the few years after the birth. Each of the parents come from a different background, which helps to give a broader perspective of this important period of life.
The only drawbacks come from the DVD itself. When the films was playing from chapter to chapter, it always “gets stuck.” When it does this you have to go back to the menu screen and find the chapter you were preparing to view and open it that way.
Also, the film is getting a little dated. However, the information in the film is still very valuable. While the DVD does not go into heavy detail in some areas, I think that the DVD is a good way to find information and can serve as a starting point for talking with your health care provider about your child’s development.

The Touchpoints parent training model explains key developmental moments faced by children and their families. Dr. Brazelton presents information in a simple, understandable, and clear way– and so he reassures parents that they CAN successfully navigate the predictable “spurts” of child development. I really liked being able to actually see Dr. Brazelton model the approaches he discusses in the Touchpoints book.
As Dr. Brazelton says, “The cost of each new achievement can temporarily disrupt the child’s progress– and the whole family’s stability. Yet each of these disruptions offers parents a chance to reflect, consider a change in direction, and grow along with the child.” New parents and students in child development courses will find the Touchpoints model engaging and helpful.
