Typically in a double-income home, the parents must both choose to return to work at some point. Studies from the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies show that 62 percent of American mothers with children under 5 years of age are currently in the workforce. Increasingly, therefore, child care centers are becoming an essential part of a child’s development, and intrinsic for many families in raising a child.

The following are some tips to enable you to narrow down your exploration of child care. If it is such a priority, it is also a choice that needs to be made carefully.

Where to Look

Begin by trying to collect references from other parents in your neighborhood. This works both to find some good child care in your area, and to eliminate bad child care. Another place to look is the Child Care Resource and Referral Center, which is an organization that helps parents to choose what is best for their child care needs, and includes a listing of some of the best child care centers in your area.

Research.

Gather pertinent information on the centers before visiting them. This includes exploring whether or not the centers are adequately licensed by the state, and what information the state has on the center. Most states have clear laws concerning the requirements of the child care worker, as well as factors such as cleanliness in the center, quality of food provided, and proper safety procedures. The state should also be able to provide for you any violations the centers have had. Again, the local CCRR can provide you this information.

Visit.

Take time to visit and to ask questions – as many you need to feel comfortable making a good decision. For example: what is the ratio of employees to children? What is a typical group size? What are the qualifications of the employees? Is this center accredited? What is the employee turnover rate? What are the safety procedures?

Read the contract.

Discuss anything that concerns you or seems to be missing.

Observe the Children.

This is an excellent indicator of the quality of the child care. Do the children show respect to the caregiver? Are they generally happy? What is a typical schedule for the children?

Call references.

Previous clients can give an excellent perspective.

Stay involved.

Once you decide on a caregiver, remain involved in the process of caring for your child. Request updates on your child as often as possible. Also, consider volunteering for special outings if possible.

Here are a few terms that are helpful to know before you start your search:

Accreditation: a recognition of a care center for voluntarily abiding by certain standards.

Age groupings: infants are birth to 12 months, toddlers are 13 to 36 months, preschoolers are three to five years, school aged are first grade to 15 years, mixed ages are care groups with children that are least one year apart in age.

Babysitting: in-home care give on a temporary or occasional basis, primarily for safety over learning.

Caregiver: an employee who takes care of children.

CCR&R: an organization that provides resources to parents about child care, and helps with financial assistance, provides referrals, and information on licensing requirements

Child Development Associate: an employee who has finished a CDA course and has been given a CDA credential.

Corporate Child Care: child care financed partially or wholly by a parent’s employer.

Family child care: care provided in a provider’s own residence.

In-home child care: care provided in the home of the child’s parents.

Informal child care: care provided by friends are relatives that is not regulated as a child care provider.

Licensing requirements: state or local standards which providers are required to meet to continue in business.

Non-traditional child care: care provided during non-traditional working hours such as weekends, early hours, or late hours.

When you adopt a child a home study is required. The purpose of the home study is to evaluate the environment the child will be living in. This is all part of the adoption process. Of course you will want to make as good of an impression as possible so that when the adoption professional visits, your home study will go through smoothly.

One problem that many people have is that they are so busy with work, the adoption, and everyday life that they find it extremely difficult to devote the time to cleaning and getting ready for their home study. Being ready for the home study as well as your child is extremely important, but it can be accomplished with out undue stress.

Getting your house ready for your adoption does not have to be an unpleasant task. Remember, this is all in preparation for bringing your child home; and if you look at it as simply part of preparing for new beginnings, it will suddenly not feel like such a chore.

Getting ready for the adoption home study can be a much easier process if you:

Make a list of everything that needs to be done. This may include remodeling a bedroom for your child, clearing out anything that is cluttering your home, etc.
Assign yourself a task to spend an hour completing each day. Take on one room at a time. On Monday you may want to spend time getting rid of clutter, Tuesday can be laundry day, Wednesday can be spent dusting and vacuuming, etc.
Use the correct tools for the job you are doing. Getting something done is so much easier if you have the proper tools to do the job. For instance, it is much easier to get something done quickly if you have a container to hold your cleaning materials. This way you will be able to take them with you from room to room instead of running back and forth to get what you need.
Get rid of the junk. This may sound simple, but some people find this very hard to do. Make it a rule that if it is not something that you absolutely love, has sentimental value, or is something that is used, it is junk and needs to be disposed of or donated to charity.
Make it fun. Instead of looking at it as work, make it more enjoyable by involving the whole family. Work together and add some upbeat music; before long you will be surprised at just how much cleaning you were able to get done.
Don’t let anything distract you. This means no TV or visiting on the telephone.
If it is a nice day, take your work outside. Yard work can be enjoyable on a sunshiny day. This not only gets the outside of your house ready, but will be helpful in lifting your spirits too.
Remember that deep cleaning involves organizing the closets, cupboards, attic and basement as well.
Open up your doors and windows. You will be amazed at how something as little as opening up windows and doors to let in some fresh air and sunshine in is able to bring a clean and fresh atmosphere to your home. As long as the weather is pleasant, let in lots of fresh air.

By following your cleaning list at a relaxed pace, before you know it your house will be ready for the home study and it will scarcely feel like you really did all that work.

Remember, your goal is to present the best possible home to the adoption professional that will be visiting your home; therefore you will want to pay as much attention to detail as possible. Remove all clutter, and clean, even in the areas that are not normally seen. Make this project a family affair and look at is as not so much a job, but one more step in bringing your child home through adoption.

When you manage a daycare, it is important to choose daycare furniture and daycare supplies that are designed to keep children safe – while making your job easier.

Daycare Furniture: Safety Considerations

Keeping in mind the old adage that prevention is the best cure, choose daycare furniture with your children in mind. Purchase the proper height tables and chairs so that getting up and down from the table is safe and easy for your children. Avoid furniture with sharp edges and corners; rounded edges are best and will prevent many accidents.

Slippery floors can also be an avoidable issue. The best flooring for a daycare center is carpeting. If you have hardwood floors or tile, cover it with non-slip area rugs to protect children when they fall. The rugs will also provide a warm, soft place to play.

Book shelves and toy shelves are essential daycare furniture, as they provide for organization and create more space within the room. However, they can also be hazardous if you have children in your daycare who like to climb. Avoid this issue by only using shelves that are about the same height as most of the children in your care, and be certain that all shelves are secured to the wall behind them.

Another consideration when choosing daycare furniture is how well the furniture is constructed and what types of materials were used. In general, avoid using painted furniture or furniture made from pressed board that is known to off-gas such as mdf. In addition, periodically check all daycare furniture for loose screws, protruding nails and splintering wood.

Daycare Supplies: Important Details

When picking out daycare supplies such as toys and games, keep the safety of the children foremost in your mind. Avoid childcare supplies that are made cheaply and don’t contain a list of ingredients. Purchase American-made, brand name daycare supplies whenever possible. This especially holds true for art supplies such as paints and play dough.

Cheaply made toys and games present other concerns. Small, easily broken plastic parts can be dangerous to young children. A good rule of thumb is not to purchase any daycare supplies with parts small enough to be put in a child’s mouth. Wooden blocks, toys and puzzles are often the best choice in daycare supplies because they are safe, sturdy and will last a long time.

Other daycare supplies to consider are cleaning supplies. While it is important to clean and disinfect all areas of the daycare, including toys and games, on a regular basis, avoid cleaning supplies made with harsh or toxic chemicals.

Daycare Safety Plan

The emergency safety plan is a critical component to keeping your students safe. While a first-aid kit is a good place to start, you need to create a plan in case of an emergency, such as a natural disaster or fire. Once you have a plan, communicate it to the families served by your daycare.

Another important safety measure is to conduct background checks on every individual you employ, including yourself. This will give you and the families you serve peace of mind.

In addition, be wary of strangers coming to pick up a child from your daycare. Be prepared to place a phone call to a parent and demand photo ID if the person picking up a child is unfamiliar to you. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when children are concerned.
