I was wondering what some similarities and differences there were between learning the phonetic alphabet for a person who speaks english and a child who knows english learning to read. The phonetic alphabet – used in spelling and readying. The one that includes the script E, the shwa, theta, and eth. It also is categorizes by where in the mouth a sound articulates from and what manner of articulation is used. Manners include Obstruents, Affricates, Fricatives, Sonorants, Liquids, and Glides.

I’m not sure I understand your question. If you are talking about the NATO phonetic alphabet, it’s used for spelling, not reading. If you are talking about a phonics-based approach to reading, that is a whole different story.

Thanks for the added info. I actually teach a beginning reading program that uses modified orthography, which, while not exactly the same as what you’re talking about, uses some modified letters to help kids remember when each letter makes a certain sound. For instance, when they first learn the /th/, /sh/, /ch/, and /wh/ sounds the letters are connected together to help them remember that the digraph makes a whole new sound, not /t/ /h/ for instance. The long vowels are initially always shown with the line on top. Silent letters are shown smaller than the rest because they don’t make their own sound.

As students learn more ‘rules’ for English, like the “magic-e rule” the modified letters fade away and disappear into conventional text. This does help both native- and non-native English speakers learn to read English. It takes a language that does not follow many rules and gives it some structure.

You need to be inspected by the fire department,Health, and SAFETY.enroll in nutrition classes for kids, and be aware of programs for low income families.
