Question by nannyof2007: What do parents look for in a childcare provider?
I provide childcare out of my home and have not found any real interested families yet. What do parents look for in a childcare provider? I am CPR certified, First Aid Trained and have 2 years of Early Childhood Education, so why cant I get clients?

A lot of times they are looking for unreasonably low prices, extended hours, references/referrals.

Its so hard to trust someone who is new…. which raised the age old question “how do I get clients when no one is willing to take a chance?” The answer is to keep perservering. Eventually you will find someone.

I would also list your service with the local Child Care Coordinating Counsel… and you did not say if you were liscenced but that is a big deal too.

We now live in the 21st century. And you know that with Internet, modernization, immigration, tourism growth, and job opportunities opening all over the world, speaking more than one language is more important than ever. So you think that teaching a second language to your child is now crucial for his future. You are totally right and I admire you for your efforts. But you don’t know where to start, and frankly, the web is so large and the options offered to you are so numerous that you find yourself lost at trying to find a reliable solution that isn’t a fraud or a scam. But don’t worry, I’ve been there too.

Your child grows with technology. In their earliest days, our children are often taught how to use it as soon as they start walking their first steps. And this is why they are so good at using computers. The level of interaction that computers give your child is an amazing tool to help them learn anything. Good pedagogy teaches that you need to interact with somebody to help him/her learn correctly at a reasonable pace. In fact, computers are just the perfect teachers, if the Software/programs are done correctly.

To me, a good online program is the cheapest Spanish language school. Often those programs will come at a fraction of the price of a course given by a real teacher, and they are just as good, plus you can use them anywhere, anytime. Also, a good complement to any online course would be to find Spanish shows for kids and make your child listen to them. You will find some good ones on YouTube or Google if you do a quick search.

There are a lot of online Spanish programs, and only a few are reasonably priced and reliable. So if you want to teach your kids Spanish, show them one of those programs and ask them if they would be interested by showing them the software games they usually contain.

We have all had the experience of listening to the radio when a song comes on that you haven’t heard in 10, 15, or 20 years. But right away you start to sing along like you heard it yesterday, you don’t miss a single word. Amazing right. Well not really. You probably heard it a hundred times in it’s hay day. Repetition.

Kids are no different. Those songs like Wheels on the Bus and The Itsy Bitsy Spider help your child learn simple concepts through repetition. Singing along to these simple songs helps them to become familiar with new words and concepts. The Old McDonald song helps young children learn the sounds that animals make and there are songs that help with numbers and colors.

Singing also helps young children feel confident and less shy around the other children. And when you add fun hand motions and wiggles to the song the kids really come to life. And if you really want to add some spice, give children some simple musical instruments. Tamboreens, bells and bongos and kazoos are very easy for children to use and they absolutely love to play them. Exposing them to music at an early age is will encourage their love for music as they grow.

Music is a magical gift that should nourished and cultivated at an early age, especially now that scientific evidence proves that
children who have been exposed to music at an early age make better math and science students later on. Medical and health-care research has also shown evidence that there is a link between music and singing and good health and healing. Children that sing are less likely to be overly stressed and have a more positive emotional profile.

The evidence is compelling that music and singing have a positive impact on all aspects of child learning and development.

Set Up Money Saving Containers
To help young children learn to save money, provide them with several savings containers, labeled with their savings goals. Small plastic jars work well. Try giving your kids their allowance in small denomination coins such as nickels and dimes, or even pennies, to make division between the savings jars easier.

Explain the Concept of Saving Money to Kids
Once your young child’s allowance is established, explain the concept of dividing up her or his money, allowing it to accumulate for savings goals. It works well to physically show children how this works with a handful of change and the labeled jars.

Help Young Children Choose Savings Categories
Once young kids understand how saving money works and how they can benefit, they are often eager to get started. Help your children choose a couple items or activities as savings goals, that aren’t too different.

You might also want to establish a mandatory category with a set amount of savings. Reward Young Children’s Money Saving Efforts
Create money saving games to share with young kids to make the activity more fun for them. For instance, you might have one day a week in which you reward them with surprise small amounts of money for extra help they do on their own around the house. Or a money matching game in which you match their accumulated savings towards a more expensive goal.

Allow Young Kids to Blow Some of Their Allowances
Most of us like to spend some money impulsively at times. Young savers are likely to enjoy saving money more if they also spend some on unplanned activities and items. Allowing your kids the fun of blowing their allowances sometimes will help encourage them to save as well

Empowering Youth: Help Your Child Learn Time Management

These days, everyone is busy. This is true even for kids.

You complain about juggling work, household tasks, school activities and family time. You feel out of control with so much to do and too little time to get things done. You get frantic about picking the kids up on time, getting dinner on the table, caring for the screaming little one who demands a lot of attention, and even a simple bedtime routine turns chaotic.

While it is true that time management for parents is a challenge, it also holds true that when you use good time management skills, you set a good example for your kids. Helping your children structure their day makes it easier for everyone to get things done. It also makes the time you spend with your children more enjoyable. The following little tips are tested as super helpful.

Help your child set goals.

What do you want? Where are you going?

The younger they are the more difficult they will find these questions. Your job as a parent is to help them gain a clear sense of what they want to accomplish; a goal that your child can visualize as worth achieving. Talk to them about what they want and help them focus on an outcome they like. Involve them in picturing that favorable outcome and setting their goals. Do not overburden them with all the things they SHOULD DO. Instead let them learn goal setting by reaching for something they really desire. Start when they are young and continuously widen the scope, and before you know it your child will have a pattern of setting and achieving his or her goals.

Divide and Conquer.

To manage big tasks, teach your kids to ‘divide and conquer’. Have them practice dividing task into manageable parts. Make sure they include the required time, resources and the steps needed to accomplish the task. You can guide them in scheduling the steps but let them create a schedule they can follow. Your child learning to organize themselves is significant. Praise them for their growth each time they make a reasonable decision. Example, “That makes good sense. Great job!”

Routine and Flexibility.

Children know they have time set aside for the regular activities in their lives. They get up the same time each morning to go to school and go to bed at the same time each night. They have a daily time for play, doing school work and chores, and they begin to learn that a schedule helps them accomplish more. Your child will benefit from having a consistent routine but it is also important to teach them flexibility. You know, like when life happens!

Brag time.

Parents guide, encourage, listen and praise. When your children complete a task, allow them to reward themselves. Help them announce their accomplishments because it will affirm that they have done good work and will encourage them to continue.

Here are some brag ideas your child can do:

- Read samples to an appreciative listener. Grandparents are always good for listening.

- Post finished works on a bulletin board or the refrigerator. To keep the space from getting cluttered, pick a designated spot for showcasing and remove an item when your child wants to display something new.

- Check tasks off as they are achieved. Younger children will enjoy getting a smiley face sticker too.

- Send samples via email to friends or relatives. This works great if you have a scanner at home.

- Just brag about it: “I did it. I knew I could do it!”

It’s common knowledge that young children whose parents read to them have a tremendous advantage in school. But did you know that you can also help your child learn mathematics by doing and supporting math at home – with games?

As a National Board Certified Master Teacher, I’ve been teaching math with games to children for many years, and I see that children no longer memorize their addition facts or multiplication tables. With the math curriculum as extensive as it is, teachers cannot afford to take the time to ensure that students learn the basic facts. Parents are partners in the process, and you can offer greater opportunities for your child to succeed in math if you support the learning of the basics at home.

Many years ago I discovered that math games fit the bill wonderfully! Math games put children in exactly the right frame of mind for learning. Children are normally very eager to play games. They relax when they play, and they concentrate. They don’t mind repeating certain facts or procedures over and over. In an engaging math game, children will be more focused and retention will be greater.

Dittos or workbook pages are not appropriate if you want your child to be excited about math. Children throw themselves into playing games the way they never throw themselves into filling out workbook pages or dittos.

Games offer a pleasant way for you to get involved in your child’s math education. You may be one of those many parents who don’t feel comfortable with math, or who assume it takes special expertise to teach it. Believe me, as a veteran teacher, when I say that you don’t have to be a math genius to play a game. With a math game, you don’t have to worry about pushing or pressuring your child. All that you have to do is propose a game to your child and start to play.

Games can help your child learn almost everything they need to master in elementary math. Games solidify the achievements of children who are already good at math, and they shore up children who need shoring up.

Children crave time spent with their parents. Because learning is a social process, children learn best through fun games that involve interaction with other people. Seize this opportunity to indulge them with your own undivided attention. Try a math game with your child. A price cannot be put on the quality of the time you will have spent together. They will have fun while learning, and they will remember those times with greater fondness than the times they spent playing the educational computer game or doing a ditto or workbook page.

There are literally hundreds of fun and easy games you can play with your kids to help them learn math and actually enjoy it! Games specific to your child’s grade level are best.

Here’s an example of a great game for Second Graders called “Get Close to 100.”

Get Close to 100 is a great game for second graders. It helps children practice double-digit addition with special emphasis on understanding place value.

Get Close to 100

What you need:
- 2 – 4 players
- deck of cards, 10s removed
- Get “Close to 100? recording sheets (below) for each player

The object of the game is to make a two-digit addition problem that comes as close to 100 as possible.

Shuffle cards and place them face down in a pile.

Player #1 turns over 4 cards and moves the cards around until he/she has created a two-digit addition problem whose sum will be as close to 100 as he/she can make it. You can go over 100. Player #1 records this problem on his/her recording sheet. Player #2 checks for addition accuracy.

Example: Player #1 draws a 4, a 7, a 2, and a 5. He/she moves the cards around until she/he decides that:

47 + 52 = 99 is the closest that he/she can get.

Player # 2 draws four cards and does the same.

The points for each round are the difference between their sum and 100.

Example: A sum of 95 scores 5 points and so does a sum of 105.

Players compare scores at the end of this first round. They put their four cards in a discard pile and player #2 begins first and turns over four more cards for the second round.

After six rounds, players total their points and the player with the lowest score wins.

These games offer you and your child the opportunity to have fun together with math, think hard, and enjoy it. How often do you say that about doing math at home?

This article will discuss, 5 basic provisions of NCLB, that you can use to advocate for your child’s education.

The US Department of Education puts out a wonderful booklet entitled “No Child Left Behind; the Parents Guide.” This booklet can be ordered online at www.nclb.gov/next. According to this booklet there are several things that this law does for children and parents.

1. “Supports learning in the early years, thereby preventing many learning difficulties that may arise later.” This is important because if a child does not learn certain skills, it may be very difficult to read at a grade appropriate level, and difficult to catch up. The Parent Guide also states “. . . research shows that most reading problems faced by adolescents and adults are the result of problems that could have been prevented through good instruction in their early childhood years.” You should be vigilant about ensuring that your child learns reading skills early.

2. “Provides more information for parents about their child’s progress.: The Parent Guide states “Under this law, each state must measure every public school student’s progress in reading, math, and science, in each of grades 3 through 8, and at least once during grades 10-12.” This testing provides objective information for parents on their child’s academics (Grades and teacher observation of progress is subjective, and not effective). You should keep copies of all of your child’s district and state wide testing. If your child with a disability is not learning to read, you should ask for appropriate reading instruction with a reading specialist.

3. “Ensures that teacher quality is a high priority.” What is important is not that the teacher has the right credentials, but that the teacher is found competent to teach children with disabilities to learn to read. Make sure that your child’s teacher is competent to teach reading.

4. “Focuses on what works.” The Parent Guide states that “NCLB puts a special emphasis on implementing educational programs. . .that have been clearly demonstrated to be effective through rigorous scientific research.” This is the most important part that parents must get involved in. If the teacher is competent, but the curriculum does not have scientific research to show that it teaches children with disabilities to learn to read, the child will probably not learn. 5. “Allows more flexibility in exchange for strong accountability.” You should hold your school district personnel accountable for teaching your child to read, if possible. Children with moderate to severe disabilities may need to focus on a functional curriculum. But children with other disabilities are capable, if they receive appropriate reading instruction.

What will work? This child is repeating kindergarten, and still cannot consistently identify letters, sounds, or sight words. He’s getting special help, but I would like to know what methods are most successful for a young child learning to read.

Repetition. Repittion, Repitition. Choose one letter at a time. When he learns one, add another. Review both letters until he knows them and then add another. You need multiple modalities. Use sand and have him draw letters in the sand. Use big pictures of letters. Have him use markers. Hide pictures of the letters in places in the room and have him look for tone letter at a time. Point out the letter you are working on when reading stories to him/ her. You can do the same things with words. You can have them match words to pictures.
