Hello, i might be starting a course at university in April, i won’t be staying there as i only live a short travel from it. But i have a 1 year old boy, i thought Care To Learn would be able to help with child care costs but i have just read they don’t when it’s university so can anyone tell me who could help as i won’t be able to afford it all?

NOBODY! YOU chose to have a kid, it’s YOUR responsibility to support it. If you can’t afford the care, then you don’t go to school. You should have been in school instead of having a kid, huh? You PAY for your own CHOICES hun, it’s not up to us!

I chose to write this book because of the pain I’ve seen in the heart of parents who have placed their child/children in child care centers that did not have the best interest of children at heart. These parents hurt deeply because they placed and even paid money on a weekly basis to have their child in a program that was not respecting the child. We have all had the experience of listening to the radio when a song comes on that you haven’t heard in 10, 15, or 20 years. But right away you start to sing along like you heard it yesterday, you don’t miss a single word. Amazing right. Well not really. You probably heard it a hundred times in it’s hay day. Repetition.

Kids are no different. Those songs like Wheels on the Bus and The Itsy Bitsy Spider help your child learn simple concepts through repetition. Singing along to these simple songs helps them to become familiar with new words and concepts. The Old McDonald song helps young children learn the sounds that animals make and there are songs that help with numbers and colors.

Singing also helps young children feel confident and less shy around the other children. And when you add fun hand motions and wiggles to the song the kids really come to life. And if you really want to add some spice, give children some simple musical instruments. Tamboreens, bells and bongos and kazoos are very easy for children to use and they absolutely love to play them. Exposing them to music at an early age is will encourage their love for music as they grow.

Music is a magical gift that should nourished and cultivated at an early age, especially now that scientific evidence proves that
children who have been exposed to music at an early age make better math and science students later on. Medical and health-care research has also shown evidence that there is a link between music and singing and good health and healing. Children that sing are less likely to be overly stressed and have a more positive emotional profile.

The evidence is compelling that music and singing have a positive impact on all aspects of child learning and development.

Many of us have dealt with anxiety in our lives. It’s often a terrifying, uncomfortable, and belittling experience. You know when it’s coming on. You feel your heartbeat begin to hasten. Your palms become sweaty. Your mind races. You begin to tremble with fear of the unknown. A shiver rolls down my spine just thinking about it!

Now think back to when you were a young child, maybe even in your early teens. If an anxiety attack is this scary now, can you imagine what it must be like for a child who has no knowledge of what’s happening to them or how to stop it? You guessed it. Absolute and unadulterated terror.

Now think of your children. Would you want them to experience this? Of course your answer is no, but the cold, hard, truth is that it may already be happening to your children, and you may not even know it. Does this mean you are a bad parent? I mean, your child is suffering and you don’t even know! The answer is a resounding NO. It does not make you a bad parent at all. On the contrary. The simple fact that you are reading this article and trying to learn more about Child Anxiety Disorder makes you a wonderful, caring parent who’d do anything for their child.

Obviously, you’ve noticed changes in your child’s behavior, or else you wouldn’t be researching child anxiety. So, how do you know if your child is suffering from anxiety? The Anxiety Free Child Program teaches you to keep two words at the front of your mind as you evaluate your child for anxiety. They are: EXPECTED and EXCESSIVE.

For example, let’s say that you are a business person and your job requires you to travel often. The first time you leave, your child cries and begs you not to go. You’d expect that type of behavior from your child, would you not? However, if your child cries for 6 hours every time you go away on business and doesn’t sleep for two nights in anticipation of your trip, that would be excessive behavior. Expected and excessive behavior will also vary with age. Behavior that’s expected of a toddler is not expected of a three or four year old child. Each child is different, and the evaluation of one child will not be the same as the evaluation of another.

This is just one of the many fantastic exercises taught in The Anxiety Free Child Program. The Anxiety Free Child Program is a course designed by child anxiety experts for use by parents in the home. If you suspect that your child is suffering from a form of child anxiety, you should certainly seek help. This course is something that you as a parent can take to have an immediate impact on your child’s anxiety.

What if you aren’t sure your child has anxiety at all? Well, here are some questions that you can ask yourself to aid you in your evaluation:

1. Has your child’s attendance at school worsened or are they hesitant to go at all?

2. Have you noticed a decline in your child’s abilty to concentrate, motivate themselves, or retain memory?

3. Have your child’s sleep habits changed? Are they having difficulty falling asleep,

staying up later, or getting up much earlier than they usually would?

4. Is your child’s response to the news and current events excessive? For instance, are they overly concerned about news of an overseas political conflict or natural disaster?

5. Does your child’s worries or fears impede their ability to lead a normal life?

If you answered yes to at least one or two of the above questions, your child may indeed have severe anxiety severe. Don’t worry, you have come to the right place to seek help.

Empowering Youth: Help Your Child Learn Time Management

These days, everyone is busy. This is true even for kids.

You complain about juggling work, household tasks, school activities and family time. You feel out of control with so much to do and too little time to get things done. You get frantic about picking the kids up on time, getting dinner on the table, caring for the screaming little one who demands a lot of attention, and even a simple bedtime routine turns chaotic.

While it is true that time management for parents is a challenge, it also holds true that when you use good time management skills, you set a good example for your kids. Helping your children structure their day makes it easier for everyone to get things done. It also makes the time you spend with your children more enjoyable. The following little tips are tested as super helpful.

Help your child set goals.

What do you want? Where are you going?

The younger they are the more difficult they will find these questions. Your job as a parent is to help them gain a clear sense of what they want to accomplish; a goal that your child can visualize as worth achieving. Talk to them about what they want and help them focus on an outcome they like. Involve them in picturing that favorable outcome and setting their goals. Do not overburden them with all the things they SHOULD DO. Instead let them learn goal setting by reaching for something they really desire. Start when they are young and continuously widen the scope, and before you know it your child will have a pattern of setting and achieving his or her goals.

Divide and Conquer.

To manage big tasks, teach your kids to ‘divide and conquer’. Have them practice dividing task into manageable parts. Make sure they include the required time, resources and the steps needed to accomplish the task. You can guide them in scheduling the steps but let them create a schedule they can follow. Your child learning to organize themselves is significant. Praise them for their growth each time they make a reasonable decision. Example, “That makes good sense. Great job!”

Routine and Flexibility.

Children know they have time set aside for the regular activities in their lives. They get up the same time each morning to go to school and go to bed at the same time each night. They have a daily time for play, doing school work and chores, and they begin to learn that a schedule helps them accomplish more. Your child will benefit from having a consistent routine but it is also important to teach them flexibility. You know, like when life happens!

Brag time.

Parents guide, encourage, listen and praise. When your children complete a task, allow them to reward themselves. Help them announce their accomplishments because it will affirm that they have done good work and will encourage them to continue.

Here are some brag ideas your child can do:

- Read samples to an appreciative listener. Grandparents are always good for listening.

- Post finished works on a bulletin board or the refrigerator. To keep the space from getting cluttered, pick a designated spot for showcasing and remove an item when your child wants to display something new.

- Check tasks off as they are achieved. Younger children will enjoy getting a smiley face sticker too.

- Send samples via email to friends or relatives. This works great if you have a scanner at home.

- Just brag about it: “I did it. I knew I could do it!”

We’re trying very hard to get a 16yo special-needs child home to his family across several states; he was here to offer his parents respite care but now has become homesick. Neither family has the financial resources to drive or fly him home… any advice?
Sorry, forgot to add all details and didn’t want to infringe upon privacy issues…but we need to drive him from Arkansas to West Virginia or fly from Memphis to Pittsburgh. Thanks for answering!

How about a local “Childrens’ Home Society” or a childrens advocacy center? Since you haven’t stated what states you need to cross its hard to give SPECIFIC info.

You are in luck- I’m in WV – If the child is really a normally resident here I would contact the WV Dept of HHR and see if they have any special assistance grants- or WV Advocates and see what they say. Sounds like he may not be able to travel alone. I sent you an email as well.

Did you know that somewhere between 4% and 10% of older adults are diagnosed with anxiety disorder? It’s surprising to learn that many of these adults actually developed anxiety disorders as children.

Anxiety in children often goes unnoticed because the symptoms mimic other behaviors that are considered normal in children.

Symptoms of anxiety in children can begin to present when they are as young as 18 months. These symptoms should be treated as soon as possible to avoid further complications throughout adulthood.

Children and adults both experience a certain degree of anxiety, and that’s perfectly normal. However, if the symptoms become recurrent and so severe that they take over daily activities, it can be very overpowering and wreak havoc.

Although it can be hard to notice signs of an anxiety disorder, there are certain symptoms you should be on the lookout for. Some of the more prevalent ones are:

-Poor concentration
-Restlessness
-Irritability
-Trouble sleeping and other sleep disorders
-Excessive Sweating
-Nausea
-Headache
-Always tired (fatigue)
-Temper tantrums
-Complains of chills
-Contantly expresses fear
-Dizziness
-Shakes
-Muscles tense (especially facial)
-Becomes withdrawn and isolated

It’s easy to see how this can adversely affect a child, and how much a child can really suffer from this affliction.

As a parent, you must learn to recognize these symptoms, and seek help if you believe your child is suffering from an anxiety disorder.

There are several things that you can do immediately to ease their anxiety. Here are 5 steps you can take to help your child overcome panic attacks:

1. Educate Yourself

The first thing you should do is get some books on the subject, or do research on the internet. You’ll be much better equipped to handle the situation if you know what to expect and can identify with how your child is feeling.

2. Educate Your Child

You’d be surprised at what a child can comprehend. Talk to them about what is going, and let them know what is happening to their body when they experience anxiety. Reassure them that you will be there to help, and that they are going to get over it.

3. Breathing And Counting Exercises

Teach your child some simple breathing and counting exercises. When an anxiety attack comes on, ask them to close their eyes, take a deep breath and count backwards from ten while thinking about their favorite toy or favorite book.

4. Use Positive Reinforcement

Reassure them that everything is going to be alright as they are counting and breathing. After the attack is over, tell them what a great job they did and how proud you are of them. This will reinforce the calming method as a positive experience and motivate them to do it again, should another attack occur.

5. Get Them Professional Help

While calming and breathing exercises help, they are just a plug in the dam. The attacks will most likely continue, and may get worse. You should seek the help of a professional. They are best equipped to give your child the help they so desperately need.

Most parents associate the words “professional help” with therapy and drugs. It’s important to know there are other options, such as The Anxiety Free Child Program.
