Children have a Natural sense of balance. An instinct as is indicative in any observation of art therapy..they just instinctively draw in balance.

Young children are more open…less bogged down by rules and fears…as is also the case, if you observe, in sports–such as skiing…their expression and daringness is just there and raw and untinged by fear of failure. They just let it all out ; having fun and expressing. What you’d equate to a “green horse”…not polluted with a mind full of preconceptions.
Thay’re unfettered by rules of how things are said to be right or wrong…they just do art from the inside–showing how they feel more readily than us adults.

Here are some ways to help you relate to and improve your relationship with your preschool age child

Physical Development:

The preschool child is a whirlwind of activity. They are active explorers of the world around them. In addition, they are more confident about using their bodies. They run smoothly, at moderate speeds, jump, climb and perform other “gross motor” activities fairly well. “Fine motor” skills, i.e., using scissors, drawing, painting, and pasting are coming along but have not yet reached the level of skill of an older 5 to 7 year old child.

Cognitive Development: Preschoolers can be described, in terms of their cognition, as “little explorer’s.” They are seeking to understand how the world operates and functions. They role-play mom and dad to determine gender differences and they take things apart to see how things work. Preschoolers can remember events from day to day; they can take what they have learned from yesterday and begin to see how it applies to today and even anticipate tomorrow.

Social Development:

Preschool age children are beginning to learn how to interact with their peers. At 3 and 4 years of age they engage in parallel play. Parallel play consists of children, in a group, playing with the same toys, but not with each other. They play “side-by-side” versus cooperatively together. At 5 and 6 years of age children begin to play cooperative, e.g., throwing a ball to each other and rolling cars back and forth. At this age gender identity is also forming and children become curious about sexual differences.

Emotional/Self Development:

At this age, preschoolers will be “like” all kinds of people from mom and dad, to the garbage man, to the policeman. The purpose behind this type of play is to understand the role of adults in their life.

Preschool Mental Development

Familiar with common shapes, primary colors. Interest in simple number activities, alphabet play, copying letters, matching/sorting. By 5, sorts and matches using more than one quality at a time. Around 4, begins to be purposeful and goal directed, to make use of a plan. Interest in producing designs, including puzzles, and in constructing play worlds. First representational pictures. prefers realism. Interest in nature, science, animals, time, how things work. peak interest in dramatic play – recreates adult occupations, uses costumes and props.

Language Development:

Language development is tied into cognitive development but is such a major part of the preschool age child, that it is addressed as a separate category. Developmentally, three-year-old children can use complete sentences and is constantly asking questions. They can speak about 900 words and can communicate their basic needs, such as “I’m hungry” or “My foot hurts.”

Make your child self-dependent

I think public is best, but that public needs to be improved to compete globally, especially in math and science. I think as a parent, if you have the financial resources, to pay for private or home school, then you have the resources to make public schools better. I think this commitment to your community, would be inspiring and an important learning experience for your child. Or if you have the talent to home school, volunteer in the schools.

In extreme cases of bullying, I could see a need for home schooling, or a different atmosphere, and believe some children do better in alternate learning models, but these can also be public.

swimmies, they are little floats that go on your arms. they keep you a float but you can still use your arms. life jackets aren’t going to really help them learn to swim because they will just float there.
