Question by julesxoxo: How much does a Director of a child care center or day care make?
I’m looking into taking classes to get an associates degree in applied science for Early childhood development which would enable me to work as a director of a child care center or day care center. Before i enroll in any classes, i want to know how much a director makes on average in Michigan. I live in the detroit-metro area.
Thanks!

Answer by K.
I worked in child care for about two years when I decided to pursue my AS in Early Childhood Education. Though I originally did it to become a director, there are other (more profitable) jobs available w/ this degree. I just moved from Jacksonville, Fl, where I saw Directors making anywhere beginning at p/ hr at small, local day cares, to salaries directors with benefits & 401K plans around 000, but these were with national child care facilities, and most had years of experience as well. Hope this helps.

I had purchased several gates before this one and had to return them all because none of them would stand securely between our wall (which is not perfectly even) and the staircase post. Though this gate … definitely “cost” more … than the others…it works!…and there are some things (like my son’s safety and our peace of mind) that you just can’t attach a dollar figure to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Features that I most like:
1. The gate is pressure mounted (no need to drill holes in our wall or staircase post).
2. It is secure (even with constant opening and closing, as well as my son’s persistent pulling, the gate stays securely mounted).
3. The gate has this additional safety feature that if you forget to lock the gate after opening, it semi-locks, which does not allow the gate door to swing open.
4. easy to mount and use!

We initially bought this gate in January when we were put our house on the market (to sell) and wanted to keep our 3 dogs off the carpeted areas. While somewhat pricey compared to the other gates on the market, we liked that it was both pressure mounted and could be adapted to work on the spindles on stairs (haven’t tried that yet). For about $… the extensions are also pricey, but again, the pressure mounting (which doesn’t move if installed properly) is great. It’s easy to use once you get the hang of it (a couple of tries) but can be a little tricky in poor lighting getting the bracket that keeps it secure in place on the bottom. The fact that is swings either way is nice as well. Once it’s locked down, our 17 month old can’t get it open, but if it’s not secured properly, she is able move the gate without lifting it and the inner workings of the hinge mechanism seem to be wearing down somewhat. Other than those minor issues, it’s a great product. She tries to climb, but can’t at this point. We’re getting ready to purchase another one for our new house so we have one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom – both for our daughter and the dogs!

I checked on the Kido website (kidcoinc.com) and this model fits openings 28″ to 36″ wide. An optional extension kit exists which measures 5.5″ (available on this webiste). The gate plus extensions can be combined for a maximum length of 47″.

Right now, our babies are infants, so the gate isn’t even for them. We have two dogs, one of which LOVES to go into the bathroom to eat the cat food. Previously, we were using one of those gates that you raise and lower the arm. With the babies, you either had to try to maneuver with one hand OR, climb over the gate. This gate, not only allows you to open and close the ‘door’ easily, it is pressure mounted so that you don’t have to drill holes in the wall which was a BIG PLUS for us. Definitely in the top ten list of gifts we received!

This is an extremely sturdy, well-made gate. We purchased the Beechwood gate to keep our dog in the kitchen when we leave our home. It goes well with our decor and fits perfectly in our doorway (with an extension). However, if your dog is a chewer DO NOT get the Beechwood gate. Go with the metal ones. Our dog chewed right through the wood in the gate and it’s now useless (not to mention over $100 down the drain). Otherwise, we were very impressed with the quality and look of this gate.
