How to Start a Home Daycare Business with Four Easy Steps

So you would like to start your own home daycare business.  There is no better time than now to start setting your goals and making your dream become a reality.  With the economy the way it is, this is a good time to look for alternatives to make money doing what you love and using some of the resources that you may all ready have.  And if you love children, then owning and running a home daycare would be your ideal career.

My wife decided to get into daycare 4 years ago when she decided that she wanted to become a stay-at-home mom and raise our newborn.  But we did need to find a way for her to bring in some sort of income just to help make ends meet.  So she decided to combine her business experience with her parenting experience and start a home daycare.  And now her business has grown to the point that we are considering moving the home daycare from our residence and opening a daycare facility.  And I would like to share some tips that she used to help her plan and start her home daycare business.

Daycare Licensing

Before you start any new career adventure, you need to know what the laws and rules that will be affecting your business.  Contact your local state daycare office and inquire about what the laws require you to do and what are your restrictions in reference to obtaining a license for a home daycare.  Some start do not require a license if you are watch a few children, but may require a license if you want to watch 6 or more children at one time.

Daycare Planning

Once you have obtained your license, you can now start the planning phase of you home daycare business.  Here you can start designing the proper forms and curriculum for the children.

Here are some of the forms that you will need to develop:

Business Plan A business plan is the most important document that you will need to develop.  It is also the simplest.  The business plan just states your business goals and the timeline that you want to achieve those goals.  It is a flexible document and can be changed at any time as you see fit.  But it is a good reference point that you can use when you need to re-evaluate your business and make decisions. Childcare Contract You can design the contract to be at least a monthly contract at a fair price that you need to set.  Make sure to state the due dates and that you need a 2 week notice if they wish to terminate the contract. Curriculum Plan You can break this down in Infants, Toddlers, 3 Year Old Preschooler, and 4 Year Old Preschooler Sign In Sheet Parental Update Generic Thank You Letters Payment Receipts

Home Daycare Needs

Now that your paper work is done, we need to get your home ready for business.  You may need some furniture to help make the children feel at home while you watch them.

You may need to purchase some of the following:

Cribs, high chairs, sleeping mats, tables, etc. diapers and baby products food and nutrition supplies play structures, toys and games arts and craft supplies

Marketing

And then now we come to the marketing of your new business.  You can post fliers with your business name, address, and phone number at you local grocery store.  You could also post a listing in your local news paper.  Another alternative is to list your self in a daycare search website on the Internet.

Do not expect to start making a lot of money the first year of business.  It takes a little time to develop the business and build your reputation.  Always remember that you are being trusted with someone’s most precious commodity.  Provide them with a safe, loving and nurturing environment.  And your home daycare business will be strong reputable business in your local community.
