Question by Ashley D: How much to charge for nanny services?
I will be a live-out nanny of a two year old and a 1 month old. I will be cleaning, cooking, taking them on field trips, doing arts and crafts, baking with them, doing all the things of a pre-school teacher. I’ll be working 40+ hours a week. how much should I charge? This is in Michigan… they said they will provide paid vacation, but I don’t know what the going rate is for these kinds of services. I also am cpr/first aid trained. I have always worked with children for many years. and I truly love children and will be pouring my soul out for these kids.

check around in the area, what do daycares charge per hour that the children are there?
I’m payed $200 a week but I’m a live-in. You should be payed at least $250-300 because you have living expenses and also you have CPR/first aid training.
What I would do is this: call around to daycare centers in the area and see what they charge per child per week. It’s usually most expensive for infants, and may go down $5 or $10 per year as the children get older. I would use that as a base, then consider the extra stuff that you will be doing and that you may be putting in more than 40 hours a week. Where I live, daycare averages from $120 per week for an infant down to $85.00 per week for kids 3 and 4, so calling that around $200.00, people here would not be willing to pay more than about $300.00 per week for the 2 kids. But if childcare costs more where you are, go from those numbers.
Depending on how they plan on paying you (cash or having you pay taxes), I would say around $500-600 per week. I was a nanny almost 10yrs ago with children of a similar age. I did everything you described and brought home $400/wk.
Do call around to child care centers to get an idea what they charge. An in-home nanny is the most expensive of child care options, so you should be paid more.
You can also look in the paper for other nanny ads, and call to ask what they plan to pay to get an idea.
Another good idea is to get some things in writing, it will cover you and the parents. Things like car use, food use, paid vacation and sick time, etc.
Charge at least $10 per hr, could charge up to $15 hr. My best friend does all that you would be doing and gets paid $600/wk before taxes.
If they pay you cash, it would be $500 week.
Paying a childcare center and paying for a nanny are on diff. levels, if they wanted to pay a cheaper center, they would have.
Congratulations on findinga happy place to work, Here are some tips I have for you. Get everything in a contract. You should be making betweek $10-13 per hour. I have a 5 hour window before I get overtime and it really works out. say the contract says you work 8 hours in one day or 40 hours a week we have it where if I work 10 hours in one day i get OT OR 45 hours in one week I get OT. http://www.nannycontracts.com is a great place to get a contract, it lays everything out for you and the family and protects both of you too. It has everything spelled out so there is no confusion. Good Luck
