in the uk you write to thier school saying they are now educated out of school.

In the US, that varies from state to state. You’ll probably have to provide information about the curriculum you’re going to teach from. When you home school, all of the planning and expense is up to you.
If you want to homeschool, the first thing you need to do is find out the legal requirements in your state. You can do this at http://www.hslda.org which will also give you a list of organizations in your state. Those organizations often get together for academic and social actiivities such as field trips, PE, coop classes, etc. They would probably also be more than willing to let you review their materials before you purchase something, so that you do not waste your time and money on something that you do not like and/or will not work for your son.
That is the best information I can offer without knowing how old your son is and what state you live in.
